James Archie "Sarge" Carter

James Archie "Sarge" Carter, 84, formerly of Perryville and Clarksville, passed away December 8, 2012, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. James was born May 11, 1928, in Altus, Arkansas to Elmer and Archie Carter. James enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1945, assigned to Company D, 25th Battalion, 7th Regiment, later assigned to Second Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington, then Korea in 1951 with Third Infantry Division. In 1958 James joined the Arkansas National Guard, serving as Administrative Supply Technician at the Perryville and Clarksville units. After 1983, he was a military instructor with the National Guard Bureau Professional Education Center, serving as Command Sergeant Major of Troop Command, Arkansas National Guard. Among awards received were the Legion of Merit and Bronze Star. In 1953, James met his love, Betty Jo Emery. She and granddaughter, Jennifer, preceded him in death. Surviving him are daughter Anita Hall (George), sons Larry Carter (Sandra),  Stan Carter (Cindy), Randy Carter (Andrea), Earl Carter (Christy) and Robert Carter (Marla), 17 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, brothers Donald Carter, Earl Carter (Emma), Carroll Carter (Glenda) and sisters-in-law Margaret Ann Carter and Betty Emery and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be at the Perryville Methodist Church, Perryville, Ark. Saturday, December 15th, 10 a.m. with graveside service at Hess Cemetery, Hartman, Ark., 2 p.m. Visitation on Friday at Hardwicke Funeral Home, Clarksville, 7-8 p.m. Donations may be made to the Perryville United Methodist Church Building Fund in lieu of flowers.
