Mildred Burgess Hurley, 107, of Russellville, Ark., died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012 at Stella Manor Nursing Home in Russellville. The daughter of Ivison and Maggie May Burgess, she was born July 27, 1904 in Lamar, Ark. She graduated from high school in Brownsville, Texas; received a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Women's University in Denton, Texas and a Master of Arts degree from George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tenn. Mildred taught school for nine years in El Dorado, Ark. and 27 years in Hector. She was a member of Arkansas Retired Teachers, charter member of Pope County Retired Teachers, Arkansas Tech University Presidential Club, life member of Texas Women's University National Alumni, Arkansas PEO, Chapter CG and Order of The Eastern Star. She was the oldest member of the First United Methodist Church, where she attended P.K. Merrill Sunday School Class, Deaton-Roush Circle and a life member of United Methodist Women's Society. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, husband Leonard Bryan Hurley and nephew Randy Talkington of Russellville. Survivors include three nieces, Pat McAnulty Petty and husband Richard of Little Rock, Ark., Marilyn Coffman and husband James of Batesville, Peggy Talkington of Russellville; four great-nieces, Tanya Sweetin and husband Lee of Little Rock, Saundra Gori and husband Paul of Houston, Texas, Susan Parker and husband David of Batesville, Kelly Shields and husband Greg of Benton; one great-nephew, Lance Talkington and wife Cheryl of Little Rock; three cousins, Catherine Royalty of Lubbock, Texas, Ethelda Oakley of Midland, Texas, Kay Johnson of Hutto, Texas and a devoted companion, Mattie Dale of Russellville. Funeral will be 2 p.m., Monday, Jan. 16, 2012 at Humphrey Chapel. Reverend Gail Brooks will officiate. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Russellville, Ark. by Humphrey Funeral Service.
