Larry Britton "L. B." Smith, 68, died at his home Wednesday evening, May 9, 2012, surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was born April 12, 1944 in Pine Bluff to Clarence Britton Smith Jr., and Betty Wallis Smith Shollmier. L.B. was raised in Pine Bluff, graduating from Pine Bluff High School. He attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and served in the Arkansas Army National Guard. He was a retired railroad engineer, having worked for Cotton Belt and Southern Pacific railroads for 29 years. He also served as Local Chairman for the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. L.B. loved hunting and fishing, and has been a member of Cotton Belt Bassmasters, H and H Hunting Club, Old Post Office Hunting Club, and Preston Seven Hunting Club, as well as the NRA and Ducks Unlimited. He also spent many years coaching the Cotton Belt 13-15 year old softball team and was an avid coin collector. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his step-father, Carl Shollmier. Survivors include his wife, Diana Rand Smith, two daughters, Suzi Smith Davis (John) of Star City, Melissa Smith Hargrave (Sam) of Woodlawn, two brothers, Bill Shollmier of Pine Bluff and Bruce Shollmier of Beaumont, Texas, and four grandchildren, Robert and Ryan Davis, and Britton and Justin Hargrave. A memorial service will be 10 a.m., Saturday, May 12, 2012 in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son with Dr. Roger Stewart officaiting. A memorial visitation will be Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Robinson's.
