Mary Kathryn Carter

Mary Kathryn Carter, age 94, of Crossett, Ark. passed away on September 12, 2012 at White River Medical Center in Batesville, Ark. She was born on October 26, 1917 in Alma, Ark. to her parents, Robert L. and Nannie Isabella Harris. She graduated from High School at age 15, graduated from what was then State Teachers College in Conway, Ark. and began teaching Latin, French and English in Crossett at age nineteen. In 1941, she married Vaskell Carter and started working for the Crossett Company at the Paper Mill in the water department. When Vaskell was drafted, she followed him to Tyler, Texas where she taught. They moved back to Crossett after the War and acquired the Lion Service Station. After the selling of the station she began to teach again. She was supportive of her husband, Vaskell serving as Mayor of Crossett, taught and raised her family. She retired from teaching in 1962. Because of her love for teaching and literature, she was a member of the Crossett Library Board. She was a Charter Member of the Crossett Book Club and the first Bridge Club in Crossett. She served on several teacher related state organizations. She was a member of DAR. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Vaskell Carter, a sister and two brothers. Survivors include three sons, Vaskell Norman Carter, Jr. and wife, Jo of Ruston, La., Dr. Robert Harris Carter and wife, Susie of Batesville, Ark., Frank Peyton Carter and wife, Robin of Dallas, Texas; grandsons, Jon Skipwith Carter, Robert H. Carter, Jr., Brandon Carter, Jason Carter; granddaughters, Nancy Suzanne Raggio, Carrie Davis and great-grandchildren, Shelby, David and Jessica Raggio, Hudson Carter and Carter Davis. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, September 15, 2012 at the Presbyterian Church of Crossett. Interment will follow at Pinewood Memorial Park under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Crossett, Ark. (www.jonesservice.com). Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., Friday at the funeral home The family would like to say a special thank you to Ouida Sawyer for her loving care over the last few years of her life.
