Happy Mahfouz

A Mass of Christian Burial for Happy Mahfouz will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012, in St. Rita Catholic Church, with Rev. Craig Scott officiating. Interment will be in Alexandria Memorial Gardens under the direction of John Kramer & Son. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012 and from 8:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012, at John Kramer & Son. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, in the funeral home. Happy Mahfouz, 80, of Alexandria, passed away Sept. 22, 2012 in Grace Home, Alexandria. He was preceded in death by one sister, JoAnn M. Pospisil and three brothers, Kelly Mahfouz, Joseph "Joe" Mahfouz, and Raymond Mahfouz. Happy Anthony Mahfouz was born on Dec. 11, 1931, in Fargo, Ark. to Laytify and Victor Mahfouz. He had ten brothers and sisters. He attended Menard High School in Alexandria, La., and was named Outstanding Defensive Linemen in 1950. He graduated a basketball star in 1951 from Menard High School. He attended Springhill College on a full-ride basketball scholarship and has since been inducted into the Springhill Hall of Fame. He has been inducted into the University of Little Rock Hall of Fame, has been honored as the MVP at the Gator Bowl in 1955, and was a member of the All Southwest Louisiana Team from 1949 to 1950. He was a distinguished military graduate of the United States Army and was recognized as Mobile's Outstanding Amateur Athlete. Happy was also a member of the All Gulf States Conference Basketball Team and the All Army Basketball Team, and was selected as Small College All American Athlete ranking 10 in the nation on free throws. He married Joan Fazio on Aug. 7, 1954. She was and has always been the love of his life. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Joan Fazio Mahfouz of Alexandria; daughter, Rosemary Mahfouz Young and husband Mark of Ramstein, Germany; three sisters, Gloria M. Baker, Maxine M. Beard, and Theresa M. Slayter, all of Alexandria; three brothers, Robert Mahfouz, Vic Mahfouz, and Peter Mahfouz, all of Alexandria; three granddaughters, Emily Norris and her husband Nate, JoAnna Young, and Patsy Young; and three great grandsons, Noah, Cannon, and Aiden.
