George Olden Spakes

George Olden Spakes, 89, a resident of Pine Bluff, died Wednesday, August 7, 2013, at his Pine Bluff home. Born September 22, 1923, in Herbine, he was a son of Cloud Augustus and Lillie Doss Spakes. Mr. Spakes was reared and received his early education in Herbine, attending the Free Hill Schools. George Olden Spakes married Opal Shelby on July 13, 1946, in Rison. Mr. Spakes was the owner and operator of George's Place restaurant for thirty-five years. He was a member of the American Legion and attended Olive Branch Missionary Baptist Church. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, and a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps. Mr. Spakes was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Judy Tucker; two brothers, Clemon and James Spakes; one sister, Blanche Jacobs. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Opal Spakes of Pine Bluff; one daughter, Jane Spakes of Russellville; one son, Gary Spakes of Watson Chapel; one granddaughter, Lori Reed of Amarillo, Texas; one great-granddaughter, Ashlynn Reed of Amarillo; one sister, Abby Rauls of Azle, Texas. The visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday, August 9, 2013, at Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 10, 2013, in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son with Brother Roger Stewart officiating.
