Mary Nell Rogers Townsend of San Marino, Calif., formerly of Earle, Ark., left us on Aug. 1, 2013. She didn't die; she simply moved on. Those who truly loved her know exactly what I mean. My mother; my savior; my friend; my fan; my defender. Born into an Eastern Arkansas farming family who believed in God and each other, Mary Nell excelled in everything to which she aspired. She graduated from Earle High School and attended Arkansas State Teacher's College. She was accepted to the Princeton Choir College, but chose a different path to Princeton. In 1945, she married Captain John Richard Townsend, a member of the Army Aircorps and a Princeton man. They settled in Garden City, N.Y. to raise a family of two children, Margaret and Richard. A career move in 1964 brought them to San Marino, Calif., where they flourished and spent the remainder of their lives. Preceding her in death are her sisters, Mahrea, Jane and Judy; and niece, Mary Lynn. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Margaret and Richard; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; her nephews, Henry and Barry; and her nieces, Judy, Ellen and Linda.
