Opal Shelby Spakes

Opal Shelby Spakes, 84, a resident of Pine Bluff, died Sunday, December 8, 2013, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center. Born December 30, 1928, she was a daughter of Austin and Inez Holderfield Shelby. Mrs. Spakes was reared and received her early education in Herbine. She was a graduate of Rison High School. Opal Shelby married George Olden Spakes on July 13, 1946, in Rison. Mrs. Spakes was the co-owner of Georges Place restaurant with her husband. She was a member of Olive Branch Missionary Baptist Church. Mrs. Spakes was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; one daughter, Judy Tucker; two brothers, J.E. Shelby, and James Shelby; two sisters, Iris Doss, and Merlene Schlafman. Survivors include one daughter, Jane Spakes of Russellville; one son, Gary Spakes of Watson Chapel; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Lori and Brian Reed of Amarillo, Texas; great-granddaughter, Ashlyn Reed of Amarillo; two sisters, Barbara Attwood of Rison, and Frankie McCollough of Jonesboro. The visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, December 11, 2013, at Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, December 12, 2013, in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son with Doctor Roger Stewart officiating.
