Mildred Amsinger Powers

Mildred Amsinger Powers, of Little Rock, Arkansas, formally of Virginia Beach, Virginia passed away peacefully on December 10, 2013 surrounded by her family. Mildred graduated Nursing School in 1939 with a RN degree. She attended Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee, on a grant from the state of Missouri to do public health nursing. She entered the Navy Nurse Corps in 1942, as an officer serving during WW II in Hawaii and hospitals in California. Mildred's career spans years of national crises. In WW II she was assigned as a Neurosurgical Nurse Specialist for the Navy hospitals, Aiea Heights, Territory of Hawaii. She also served during the Korean Conflict as a Nurse Clinician and Supervisor throughout the United States, abroad in Iceland during 1965 and in other Navy hospitals. Mildred retired from the Navy in 1968 following 27 years of duty. After retirement Mildred worked in various hospitals in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Virginia. Mrs. Powers was a commission officer in the USN and is a Retired Lt. Commander. While stationed at the US Naval hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia, in 1952, Mildred met her husband, a retired naval officer, and married January 1954. She is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Frieda Amsinger, husband Newt Powers. She is survived by her cousin, Kathy (Dudley) Swann and their children TJ (Rachel) Claggett and their children Alora, Thad; Beth Hall, her son Hap; Julie (Britt) Mitchell and their children Riley and Maddie.
