On Dec. 12, 2013, Horace Vernon "Vern" Maffit passed away after a brief illness. Vern was born on Nov. 7, 1926, in Nampa, Idaho, to the late Gilbert and Florence Maffit. He served honorably aboard the USS Farragut during WWII. After the war, he returned to attend the University of Southern California (USC), where he met and married Ruth Maffit, his now-deceased wife of more than 50 years. He had a long career in the Aerospace industry. In 2006, he married Minta Speights, with whom he shared the past seven wonderful years. He is survived by Minta; and his two sons and daughter-in-laws, Will (Marian) and Robert (Erin); as well as one grandson; three granddaughters; a stepdaughter; a stepson; a step-granddaughter; a step-great-granddaughter; and a step-great-grandson. Vern was a kind, caring, generous and well respected man beneath his tough exterior. His hobbies were woodworking and puttering in his garage. He truly loved animals, and enjoyed discussing politics with anyone that would listen. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him. A memorial service will be held at a to-be-determined date and location. The family respectfully requests that memorial donations be directed to the Arkansas Hospice Hot Springs Inpatient Center, located in Mercy Hospital or the Garland County Humane Society.
