Nell Brown Dipert

Nell Brown Dipert, 94, former Postmistress and long time resident of Damascus, Arkansas, died January the 2nd, 2013. She was born Willie Vernell Brown November 11, 1918 in Damascus to Lydia Lou Dora Megee Brown and William Andrew Brown, a store owner and letter carrier for the U.S. Post Office. Nell's grandparents, Anderson E. and Lydia Hutto came to Damascus from Mississippi by wagon around 1878 and were among the founders of the town. As a young adolescent, Nell and her mother moved to Clinton so that Nell could get a High School education and diploma. While a teenager, Nell met and fell in love with a young recruit in the CCC Camp not far from her home and on Christmas Eve of 1936 she boarded a bus for Little Rock where Daniel Robert Dipert was waiting to meet her and, without stopping for as much as a sandwich, they headed for the courthouse to become man and wife. They lived in Tulsa for a time before moving back to Damascus to build and run Coffee Dan's, a must stop café and City Service Station on Hwy. 65 for over 45 years. The famous and infamous all enjoyed the food and the company Dan provided on that winding stretch of road from Dallas to Chicago. Nell was quite active with Eastern Star in her lifetime rising to the level of Grand Marshall for the State of Arkansas and Worthy Matron of District 11, Chapter 515 in Damascus. Nell and Dan were also members of First Baptist Church of Damascus all their married lives. Nell had two children, Jean and Dan, whom she loved and loved raising. She also traveled a great deal both for her own pleasure and as a tour director for her son's business,Dan Dipert Tours. She and her husband made regular trips to Corpus Christi or Alaska every summer until their retirement to fish. Nell also travelled all over North America and the world and, in fact, visited more places than her well traveled husband. She enjoyed boasting that she had seen Spain and the Rock of Gibraltar and he had not. Nell was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Doyne and Burl Brown; sister, Wilma; and grandson, Albert Glen Hall. She is survived by her husband, Dan R. (Coffee Dan) Dipert; sister, Dr. Billye J. Brown of Austin, Texas, children, Jean Dipert Hall of Damascus and her husband, Jerry, and Dan Dipert of Arlington, Texas and his wife, Linda; grandsons, Alan Hall and Dan W. Dipert; granddaughters, Iris Hall Osmon, Autumn Dipert Brown, Shelley Hall Quattlebaum, and Leanne Hall Collins; eleven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Services will be conducted Saturday, January 5th at 2 o'clock in the afternoon at the First Baptist Church, Damascus, Arkansas preceded by a private burial. The family wishes to thank Mary Jane Keller and other friends who assisted Nell's husband, Dan, in her care.
