STEPHEN E. SCHUBERT SR., 93, of North Little Rock and formerly of Hot Springs passed away Oct. 25, 2012. He was born Nov. 8, 1918 in Big Spring, Texas to George H. Johnson and Lydia A. Keating. He was nicknamed "Tiny" by his siblings and early friends due to his three lb. premature birth weight. Later, known affectionately as "Pappy" to his 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, he tried to instill the importance of education and the value of saving for a rainy day. Steve was valedictorian at Cathedral High in El Paso, Texas and graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in chemical engineering. He worked for the government during World War II at Oak Ridge, Tenn.; Arkansas Inspection and Rating Bureau and retired from Weyerhaeuser Co. He was a jack-of-all trade handyman around the house, a Lifemaster in bridge, enjoyed a round of golf, loved watching football and volunteered coaching his sons sports endeavors. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wives Jeanne Long Schubert (the mother of his children), Inez Varner Schubert, Jeanne Box Schubert and Wanda Harper Schubert; and brother, George H. Keating. Survived by a sister, Frances Means (El Paso, Texas); sons Stephen E. Schubert Jr. (Cathy), Eric C. Schubert (Jane) and daughter Karen L. Wolfe (Ken). Steve enjoyed his stay at Parkstone Retirement Center and the many friends he met there. He especially enjoyed participating in Bible trivia at the center. The family would like to thank the compassionate care he received at Baptist Health Medical Center. Memorials may be made to the Donor's Choice. A memorial service celebrating his life will be conducted at 10 a.m., Tuesday at North Little Rock Funeral Home Chapel, a Smith Family Funeral Home. Online obituary at www.SmithFamilyCares.com.
