Lee Cordell Chavis, Sr.

With inexplicable sorrow in our hearts, the family of Lee Cordell Chavis Sr. announces his joyous arrival into Heaven. Although we will miss him dearly, we are so happy that he is at peace and enjoying the company of his Heavenly family. Lee Cordell Chavis, Sr. of Rye, Arkansas was born April 30, 1940, the second son of Gordon and Olta Church Chavis, both deceased. Cordell was relieved of his suffering on June 22, 2013 at Arkansas Hospice, St. Vincent's Hospital in Little Rock. He was also predeceased by brothers Ridgeway Chavis and Robert Ed (Bob) Chavis, mother-in-law Margaret Walter and father-in-law Henry Walter. Cordell graduated from Watson Chapel High School in 1958 and he received his Bachelor of Science of Degree in Forestry from Arkansas A&M College in 1964. He spent his career working with wood and wood products. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, football, and basketball. He was a Baptist by faith and he lived every day practicing his beliefs. Survivors include his beloved wife of 49 years, Voletta (Leta) Walter Chavis of Rye, and two children: his son, Lee Chavis Jr. and his wife Kim and their daughters Leah and Kate of Little Rock, and daughter, Cheryl Chavis Wren and her husband Vince Wren and their children Craig and Catherine of Little Rock, a brother, Bill Doug Chavis of Grapeland, Texas, sisters-in-law, Betty Chavis of Fullerton, California, Mattie Chavis of Pine Bluff, Kay Chavis of Pine Bluff, Cleo Chavis of Grapeland, Texas, sister-in-law, Fran Walter Owens of Palm Harbor, Florida, brother-in-law, Glen Walter of Rye, in-laws Kyle and Carol Walter of Hardy, Arkansas, Danny and Linda Walter of Pine Bluff, and Chad and Dell Walter Higgins of Fairmont, West Virginia, four loving nieces and 17 loving nephews. The family wishes to express their gratitude to all the doctors, nurses, and medical personnel who participated in Cordell's care with special thanks to Dr. Balan Nair, Dr. Tim Simon, Dr. Wyble, Dr. Joe Pevahouse, Dr. Steven Wright, Dr. Neal Wyatt, Dr. Lehmburg, Dr. Joe Hargrove, Dr. Pande, and Dawn, Michelle, Mechelle, and Pam at Fresenius Dialysis Center in Monticello, Arkansas Hospice at St. Vincent's Hospital in Little Rock, chaplains Pat Singer and Stephanie Fox, UAMS Medical Center, Drew Memorial Hospital, and Baptist Hospital. Memorial Service will be held at a later date with inurnment to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers and requests privacy at this time.
