Dr. Kathalyn Scott, age 86, of Grand Blanc, Mich., passed away peacefully, Sunday, June 23, 2013 at 2:38 a.m. Family hour 10 a.m. Monday, July 1, 2013 at Christ The King Catholic Church, 1811 Seymour Ave., Flint, Mich., 48503, with funeral service commencing at 11 a.m. Pastor Larry Holley officiating, Fr. Phil Schmitter, Host Pastor. Interment Lovedale Memorial Cemetery, G-5175 E. Bristol Rd., Burton, Mich.. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10 a.m. Monday. Dr. Kathalyn Scott will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., Flint, Mich., 48505, and may be viewed from 4-6 p.m. Sunday. Dr. Kathalyn Scott was born in Union County, Arkansas on April 25, 1927. Dr. Kathalyn Scott was the second of seven children, born to Mr. and Mrs. Gallie S. and Evelyn K. Scott. She attended Smith High School, where she graduated at the age of 16 as the Valedictorian of her class, received a Bachelor of Arts from Philander Smith College, as well as a M.A. and Ph.D from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Dr. Kathalyn Scott chose a career in education and maintained her passion for teaching and learning throughout her lifetime. In the beginning of her career, she was employed at Rosston School District in Nevada County, Arkansas. After 19 years of service, Dr. Scott relocated to Detroit, Michigan and worked at Pershing High School, where she became Dean of Students. Dr. Kathlyn Scott was an active member of the Democratic Party, a lifetime member of the National Alliance of Black School Educators and the NAACP. Dr. Kathalyn Scott is survived by her sister, Rhondie B. Stephens; her younger brothers, Clifford Scott and Harold C. Scott (Paula); as well as a host of nieces and nephews who respect, admire, love and miss her immensely. Dr. Kathalyn Scott was preceded in death by her parents, Gallie S. and Evelyn K. Scott; two brothers, Carl and Joe Scott; and one sister, Melbatine Hunter. Many friends and admirers will miss Dr. Kathalyn Scott deeply.
