Candi Ann (Spikes) Van Patter, 49, of Little Rock passed peacefully on March 19, 2013 because of complications from an auto accident. She was born on September 14, 1963 in Little Rock. She is survived by her mother, Karen (Spikes) Clements, father, Jim Spikes, younger sister, Miki Deerman, younger brother, Jimmy Spikes, her two children, Drew Van Patter and Devin Van Patter, and loving boyfriend Tom Qualls. She was a graduate of McClellan High School in Little Rock and went on to receive a Bachelor's of Education from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Candi was a beloved 4th grade teacher at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in Little Rock, where she taught for 19 years. She received the Teacher of the Year Award from MLK Elementary for the 2011-2012 school year. She was the Classroom Teacher's Association representative for MLK Elementary. Candi served on the Arkansas Department of Education writing assessment team as well as numerous district writing committees and school committees. She was also a big volunteer for the Susan G. Komen RFTC Survivor Parade. Candi was selected by the Gilder Lehrman Summer History Institute to study in London, England and Denver, Colorado. Candi loved and accepted all with no judgment. She was an amazing example of living life to its fullest and not taking anything for granted. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Arkansas Dream Center (ARDC).
