Jack Dunham Carson

Jack Dunham Carson died October 8, 2013 at Drew Memorial Hospital in Monticello. He was born July 4, 1923 in Monticello to the late Margaret Dunham Carson and Frank Carson Sr. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Athalie Carson Gabbie and a brother, Frank Carson Jr. He was a merchant for many years, operating Carson's Grocery and Market with his brothers Frank Carson, Jr. (Buddy), Bill and later with his son Richard until it closed in 1995, ending a family-owned tradition tracing back to the late 1800's. He was a beloved husband, father, granddad and father-in-law. He was a dedicated member of the Monticello Fire Department for 42 years having served 28 of those years as Fire Chief. Jack was a veteran of World War II, serving as a Staff Sergeant in the Quarter Master Corps of the Combat Engineers. He was an avid turkey hunter, loved to hunt, fish and spend time walking and riding in the woods and gardening. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Monticello. Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Lanier Clingman Carson of Monticello, whom he married February 27, 1945 in Tacoma, Washington; one son, Jack Richard Carson and wife, Karen of Monticello; one granddaughter, Melanie Lanier Carson of Conway; one brother, Billy Carson and wife, Jo of Monticello; two sister-in-laws, Arthurline Clingman of Austin, Texas and Wanda Gardner of Monticello; one adopted sister-in-law, Judy McInnis of Austin, Texas and many nephews, nieces and friends. Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Thursday, October 10 at Oakland Cemetery in Monticello.
