Walter Scott "Sonny" Johnson passed away Wednesday, October 2, 2013. He was born on October 23, 1933, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, to Rubye Scott Johnson and Walter Raleigh Johnson. He was a member of the Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Merrill High School and A.M.&N. College. He was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force. After teaching school for many years, Sonny left the field of education to become the Assistant Director, and later the Director, of the Jefferson County Office of Economic Opportunity, until 1998. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. Sonny met the love of his life, Juana Joyce Gamble, while at A.M.&.N College. They were married on September 30, 1962. Survivors include his wife, Special Cousins: Harold Spivey (Jessie) of Little Rock, Arkansas; Ray Spivey (Linda) of Florissant, Missouri; sisters-in-law, Ophelia Price of Chicago, Illinois; and Arlethia Fisher (Bobby) of Sibolo, Texas. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, October 12, 2013, at the Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church, with the Reverend Marion Humphrey, officiating. Interment will be at the Bellwood Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, 5-6 p.m. at the P.K. Miller Mortuary. Mr. Johnson will lie in repose at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
