Lois Kathryn Atkins

Mrs. Lois Kathryn Atkins, 90, of Hamburg, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013. Mrs. Atkins was born on Aug. 27, 1923, in the Berea Community East of Hamburg. She lived in Johnsville as a child and moved to Hamburg in 1938. Smart as a whip, creative, and resourceful, she began her adventurous life with her husband, William "Buddy" Clark Atkins, at age 19. An army wife, she followed him while he was stationed on land, and then settled down to wait for his return as he continued his service overseas. Their family grew and Lois shared her numerous gifts with the fishing pole, paintbrush, and sewing needle, with her large extended family and the community of Hamburg. She was a homemaker; a member of the Hamburg Presbyterian Church and attended the First Baptist Church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She will be dearly missed. She is preceded in death by "Buddy," her beloved husband of 65 years; son-in-law, Major Jimmy Minshew; her parents, Ira Green and Malinda Jane Ferguson; four brothers, Ira, Ernest, Daniel and Harry Ferguson; and grandparents, John Adair and Malinda Catherine Gifford Adair. She is survived by her children, Cheryl Minshew, of Austin; Gary Atkins of Maumelle, and Deborah Carpenter and husband, Benji, of Hamburg; seven grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a host of loving nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews; and her wonderful cats, Miss Kitty and Opie. Funeral services are 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013 at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Bobby Pennington and Rev. Clark Atkins officiating. Burial will be in Pinewood Memorial Park.
