Flossie Wood Boles, age 95, daughter of Walter and Edith Wood, was born in Flippin, Arkansas. "Flossie from Flippin" valued her farm life upbringing and education, and was always an Arkansas ambassador who loved the dogwoods. After two years at Central Baptist College in Conway, Flossie transferred to the University of Arkansas. Her campus leadership included being elected President of the Girls 4-H House and being named Homecoming Queen. After graduation (BSHE '41) Flossie worked as home demonstration agent in DeWitt. There she married Joffre Boles, a Texas native, football coach (Harrison and De Witt) and later VA Hospital administrator. They moved often in Navy days and thereafter, always making new friends. During the 1960s and ‘70s, Flossie had a TV cooking show for 12 years in Dayton, Ohio, while working as a home economist for Dayton Power and Light. The Boles retired to Arkansas in 1976. Following Joffre's death in 2001, Flossie remained in Flippin until 2007 when she moved to Chicago to be near her daughter. She lived in an independent living center with a view of Lake Michigan, Lincoln Park and the Chicago skyline and enjoyed gardening and city activities. She was a sports fan, and her favorite team was the Razorbacks. She died on September 22, 2013, from complications following a fall. Flossie is survived by her only child, Kaye Wertz, PhD; and son-in-law, Robert D. Wertz, MD; and beloved nieces and nephews. Visitation for Mrs. Boles will be 6-8 pm, Friday, September 27, 2013 at Burns Funeral Home in Yellville. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, September 28, 2013, at First Baptist Church of Flippin with Bro. Steve Martin officiating. Interment will follow at Flippin Cemetery in Flippin.
