Winford Lavon Phillips passed away on August 10, 2015, in Springdale, Ark., after a lengthy illness. She was born on April 12, 1936, in Letona, Ark., to the late Arnold and Edna Wyatt. Lavon was a 1955 graduate of Searcy High School and graduated from the Baptist School of Nursing in Little Rock. She spent her career as an LPN caring for older people, retiring from the Veterans' Administration. In 1969, she wed Donald Phillips, and they were married until his recent death. Lavon was a great daughter, sister, wife, aunt and friend. She was an excellent baker and made the best homemade divinity at Christmastime. When her nieces and nephews graduated from high school she crocheted each a large afghan which required a lot of time and love. She will be remembered for her direct candor, her enjoyment of clothes shopping, how she cared for her dogs and her passion for chasing the Razorbacks. Survivors include: two brothers and their wives, Delton (Michele) Wyatt, Jerry (Teddy) Wyatt, all of Searcy; a stepson, Dewayne Phillips of Hot Springs and his sons, Matthew and John, both of Texas; sister-in-law Lois Edwards and her children; nine nephews and nieces: David, Kim, Shelly, Heather, Jennifer, Dustin, Mindy, Brittany and Jonathan; and 20 great-nephews and nieces. Special thanks to Maples at Har-Ber Meadows Nursing in Springdale for their excellent care. Visitation will be held at Powell Funeral Home in Searcy on Thursday, August 13th, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. with graveside service following at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Paws Inn Animal Shelter in Searcy. www.powellfuneralhome.net.
