Troy Basil Collier, 87, passed away on Tuesday, July 28, 2015. He was born in Hartman, Arkansas and was a resident of Newport News. Troy learned to fly during his time serving as a U.S. Marine. Following his time in the Marines, he went to barber school and in his career as a barber became a master stylist. Answering a call from God he founded and directed Teen Challenge of Arkansas in 1969. In 1978 he began the work of Youth Challenge in Newport News and was the founder and Executive Director. The numbers of lives he touched are countless. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was a member of Warwick Assembly of God and the Kiwanis Club of Oyster Point. Troy was preceded in rest by his wife of 53 years, Bettye Lou Collier; and sisters, Glenda Mays, Midge Crouch and Betty Jones. He is survived by his sons, Michael Collier of North Little Rock, Ark. and Terry Collier of Paris, Ark.; daughter, Sharon McCarty of Newport News; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren which includes the arrival on July 30th of Ava Elizabeth Howell; brothers, Dub Collier of Kansas City, Mo. and Bill Collier of North Little Rock, Ark.; and sisters, Ruby Milne of Oxnard, Calif. and Dora Macdonald of Seaside, Calif. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 2015 at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. A celebration of Troy's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, at Warwick Assembly of God, 1228 Todds Lane, in Hampton, officiated by Pastors Jim Rodriguez and Jim Weston. Interment will be at a later date in Edgewood Memorial Park, in North Little Rock, Ark. Memorial contributions may be made to Youth Challenge, P.O. Box 543, Newport News, Va. 23607.
