Shirley M. Shumate

Shirley M. Shumate, 84, of Springdale and former long-term resident of North Little Rock, passed away Saturday, March 26, 2016 at Springdale Health and Rehabilitation in Springdale. She was born July 7, 1931 in Little Rock, Ark. to Aubrey and Velma Rhea Ligon Ledbetter. Shirley was a homemaker and dog lover. She loved traveling, RVing, antiquing, was a talented seamstress, a great cook, loved to entertain and loved to dance. She was an avid bridge player. She never met a stranger. She was an an Air Force Spouse for 21 years. She was a true believer in Christ and very involved in her church, Cross Church Springdale. She also volunteered at the Veterans Hospital and the Arkansas Children's Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents and two step-fathers, Edwin J. Smith and Ralph E. Smith. Survivors include her husband, Andrew Shumate of the home; one son, James Shumate of Springdale; two daughters, Susan Shumate and Teri Shumate, both of Springdale; one sister, Sandra Mudge and husband, Wilson of Jacksonville, Ark.; two grandchildren, Anthony Shumate of Seattle, Wash. and Kelsey Shumate of Boulder, Colo. Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at 10 a.m. at Sisco Funeral Chapel of Springdale with Pastor Charlie Foster officiating. Burial will follow at Fayetteville National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. before the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a Humane Society of your choice.
