Barbara Faye Mason Young

Barbara Faye Mason Young, beloved mother, grandmother, wife, daughter and friend, died peacefully Saturday, October 29, 2016. Formerly of McCrory, Ark., she has lived the last two years in Memphis, Tenn. Barbara was born August 19, 1932, in Beedeville, Ark., to Edgar and Hazel Mason. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her husband, Jan Boyd Young Jr. She is survived by her son, Jan Boyd Young III, and his wife, Lois; and grandson, Jan Bailey Young; all of Marion, Ark.; two nieces, Jan Pascal Young of Los Angeles, Calif., and Joy Young of Washington, D.C., as well as many other family members and friends. Barbara was a beautiful, kind and distinguished southern woman who accomplished many goals throughout her life, but she seemed most proud of her son and grandson. She was president of the McCrory Garden Club in Arkansas and the Germantown Garden Club in Tennessee. She was state president of the Arkansas Federation of Garden Clubs and South Central Regional Director of the National Council of State Garden Clubs (now called National Garden Clubs, Inc.) For many years Barbara was also a member of the National Garden Clubs Judges Council, traveling the country to judge flower shows. During the Clinton administration she was part of a group of Arkansas garden club members who decorated the White House each year for Christmas. From 1988 through 1995, she served as administrator over the Woodruff County Hospital and Residential Care Facility. For more than 10 years after her husband died, she managed the financial books for the Young family farm. She was a member of the McCrory United Methodist Church for many years and most recently a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Memphis, Tennessee, where she was a former board of trustees member and choir member. She had a beautiful soprano voice and loved to sing and play the piano. Barbara also loved cooking, playing cards, gardening, fishing and traveling with family and friends. A service celebrating her life will be held Friday, November 4, at 3 p.m. at Thompson-Wilson Funeral Home in McCrory, Ark., with internment at Fakes Cemetery.
