Dorothy Jean Akers, 92, of Helena, passed away on Nov. 1, 2016. She was born August 26, 1924 to t he late C.C. and Carrie Yoakum of Vernon, Texas. She graduated high school in Vernon, Texas and soon after that met the love of her life, William "Bill" Akers, who was stationed in Oklahoma with the United States Air Force. She married Bill in 1945 in Vernon, Texas. They were married for 65 years. She leaves behind three sons and two daughters, Dan (Pat) Akers of Searcy, Debbie Galloway of Helena, Murray (Barbara) Akers of Owasso, Okla. Jeannie (Randy) Davis of Austin, Ark., and Chris (Gayle) Akers of Cabot. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Miloise Lyford of Little Rock, Ark. She also leaves behind a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dorothy worked at the Tax Assessors office at the Phillips County courthouse for over 20 years. She was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Helena. She enjoyed playing bridge with her friends and gardening. She was a very proud of her yard. A graveside service will be held Friday, Nov. 11, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Maple Hill Cemetery in Helena, Ark. Memorials can be sent to the First United Methodist Church in Helena or Humane Society of the Delta in Helena, Ark.
