George U. Ross, 88, of Charleston, Ark., passed away Nov. 18, 2016 at Fort Smith, Ark. He was born Jan. 13, 1928 in Charleston, Ark., to the late Jim and Myrtle McDonald Ross. He was a retired U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War and a two time Purple Heart recipient and a retired Rural Mail Carrier. Mr. Ross attended the First United Methodist Church of Charleston, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge 131, member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, member of the Order of the Eastern Star 16, a life member of the American Legion Post 8, member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, James Ross and two sisters, LaRue Wald and Billie Bagwell. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday Nov. 23, 2016 at Smith Mortuary Chapel and burial with Masonic Rights and full military honors will follow at the Garden of Memories cemetery under the direction of Smith Mortuary, Charleston, Ark. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 64 years, Anita (Page) Ross; one daughter, Paula Chitwood of Pocola, Okla.; two sons, Colonel Ret. Mike Ross and wife, Debbie of North Little Rock and Mark Ross and wife, Angela of Fort Smith; one sister, Betty Sullivan and husband, Tony of Fort Smith; one brother, Clinton (Benny) L. Ross; five grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Smith Mortuary.
