James McCuen Augur

James McCuen Augur, 80, died Friday, Sept. 9, 2016 surrounded by his daughters at home in Dallas, Texas. Born Oct. 17, 1935 in Huntington, W.Va., to the late Frank Emmett Augur and Louise Groene Augur. He will be remembered by his friends and family for his love of architecture, wildlife paintings and culinary pursuits, as well as, his quick wit, snappy dress, limericks, and strong faith. He graduated from Washington University, St. Louis, Mo. with a Bachelor of Architecture. He began his architectural career in Dallas with Harrell and Hamilton Architects and then Chairman and President of Augur and Associates, Inc. Career highlights included significant responsibilities for Dallas projects including Republic National Bank, Mountain View Community College, the Fairmont Hotel, the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport, as well as, numerous commercial and residential projects. After retiring, Jim, continued as an architectural consultant; a professional artist, specializing in wildlife and landscape oil paintings highlighted by a one man show at Art Dallas gallery; and a professional chef, having studied under Dallas' Helen Corbitt and the CIA in California. Additionally, he enjoyed his civic and philanthropic involvement. He served as Chairman Emeritus of the Texas Chapter for the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums, Co-Chairman of the SMU Annul Fund Campaign; Trustee for Feed the Hungry Foundation; SMU Meadows School of Fine Arts, Sky Ranch youth camp, National Jewish Hospital in Denver, The Dallas Zoological Society, The Nature Conservancy of Texas, DAYTOP drug rehabilitation centers, TACA, United Cerebral Palsy Foundation and the Shakespeare Festival; President and Director of the Dallas Civic Opera Guild, The Science Place, and Circus Circus, Inc.; also volunteering with Hunger Busters, VNA - Meals on Wheels and a member of the Appraisal Review Board for the Dallas Central Appraisal District; and is a past member of The Dallas Assembly, Dallas Country Club, Columbian Country Club, Idlewild Men's Club, Calyx Men's Club, Terpsichorean Men's Club and Turtle Creek Breakfast Club. Jim had been married to Marilyn Hussman Augur, daughter of the late Walter and Betty Hussman of Camden and brother of Walter Hussman Jr. of Little Rock. Jim is survived by this three daughters and their husbands, Margaret and Barry Hancock of Dallas, Texas, Elizabeth and Starke Taylor of Zionsville, Ind., Ann Louise and Mark Hardaway of Dallas, Texas, eight grandchildren, his younger brother and wife, Lynn and Frank Augur Jr.; 12 nieces and nephews, and many friends who love him very much. He is eternally reunited with his parents, sister, and extended family who welcomed him into heaven with open arms. The service celebrating his life will be Saturday, Sept. 17 at 11 a.m. at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 8011 Douglas, Dallas, Texas 75225.
