Robert Lee "Bob" Collins, 88 of Springdale, passed away Sunday, January 29, 2017 at Northwest Medical Center in Springdale. He was born July 24, 1928 in Gravette, Arkansas to Henry Robert and Thelma Galyean Collins. Bob graduated from Gravette High School. He served in the United States Army. Bob began working for Harvey Jones at age 18 and retired as Senior Vice President of Jones Truck Lines in 1981. At age 22, Bob became a charter member of the First Presbyterian Church in Springdale and was an ordained elder. He served in many capacities at the church, including chairman of the building committee for the present building. He was a member of Springdale Kiwanis for over 40 years where he received a Lifetime Membership and the Walter Zeller Fellowship awards. Bob was an ardent supporter of the Springdale School System where he served on the Superintendent's Patron Shelf. Bob served on the Springdale City Council from August 12, 1986 through December of 1998. During his tenure, he served as head of the Finance Committee, Personnel Committee, and served on the Airport Commission and the Advertising and Promotion Commission. Bob served on the Springdale Planning Commission from January 1992 until December 2001. Bob loved his family. He adored his daughters, grandkids and great grandkids. He and Lena had many adventures traveling extensively with family and many close friends. He liked playing bridge with friends and having coffee with the coffee shop buddies. Bob had a great sense of humor teasing family and friends and he always had a joke to tell. He was predeceased by one great-grandson, Parke Henry Gibson. Survivors include his wife, Lena Collins of 64 years; two daughters, Debbie Van Pelt and husband Marc and Linda Leighton and husband Greg of Springdale; five grandchildren, Drew Weir and wife Jamia, Lindsey Gibson and husband Micah, Chelsea Kiser and husband Harrison, Colin Leighton, and Tyler Weir and wife Emily; eight great-grandchildren, Judd and Laurel Weir; Landry, Collier, Bretton and Mabry Gibson; Lyle Katharine Weir and Leighton Kiser. He is also survived by some special loved ones, caregivers: Alex Ramos and Aaron Barchenger. Swedish exchange student (1986-1987) Dr. Niklas Heijne; one brother, Luke Collins and three sisters, June Young, Edna Vancleave and Glenda Lamb. A memorial service honoring Bob's life will be held Saturday, February 4 at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 100 S. Gutensohn Road in Springdale.
