Susie West

Susie West, 86, a retired teacher, of Russellville and formerly of Little Rock, died Wednesday, February 15, 2017, at Arkansas Hospice River Valley Home in Russellville. The elder daughter of W.A. "June" West, Jr. and Mary Alice (Ellington) West she was born December 4, 1930, in Russellville. She was a graduate of Russellville High School, Arkansas Tech University and the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Her teaching career spanned 27 years, primarily teaching Senior English at Mabelvale and McClellan High Schools in Little Rock. She was a member of Central Presbyterian Church in Russellville and she was preceded in death by her parents. Susie loved teaching, poetry, former students, sunflowers, and a lively discussion. Always the consummate teacher, she continued to challenge and to inspire her friends, colleagues and family. She was a student of the great authors, especially English Literature, and of history. She is survived by her niece, Debi Nordin and her husband, Phillip, Russellville; nephew, Wayne West Young and his wife, Kristen, Fayetteville; several great-nieces, and great-nephews, and cousins. A memorial service remembering Susie West and "A few of Her Favorite Things" will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, February 18, 2017, at Humphrey Chapel. Mr. Jim Bob Humphrey will officiate. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Russellville, under the direction of Humphrey Funeral Service. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until service time at the funeral home.
