Marshall D. Smith

Marshall D Smith, 80, of Vilonia went to be with the Lord on June 26, 2017. Born in North Little Rock, he loved serving in his community through his banking career, service in government, and his church. Marshall was a retired banker of 42 years. He began his career at First American Bank in Little Rock and retired as president of Centennial Bank of Jacksonville. Marshall was one of the longest serving alderman on the Jacksonville City Council with 32 years and was a member and officer of many organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Kiwanis, and the Jaycees. After moving to Vilonia in 2012 to be closer to family, he was currently serving as Vilonia City Recorder/Treasurer, a member of the city planning commission, and of Vilonia Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed being active in city government and loved his visits to city hall. Marshall also served his country in the Air National Guard earlier in life. Marshall was always active in church and considered following Christ as his most important decision. He served as deacon for over 30 years at 1st Freewill Baptist in Jacksonville and moderator for the Freewill Baptist Association. He currently was an active member of Vilonia First Baptist. Marshall was also a singer and pianist and enjoyed singing every chance he got. In 1972 Marshall and his wife helped form the Gospel Tones Quartet, traveling throughout Arkansas for over 40 years. Even after the group retired, they remained his dearest friends and met often to eat and fellowship. Marshall was well respected and a man of integrity. He never met a stranger, treated everyone with kindness, and greeted them with his infectious smile. Marshall was preceded in death by his parents, Marshall H. and Autie Owen Smith. He leaves behind the love of his life for 58 years, Edith, of Vilonia; two children, Michael (Valerie) Smith of Cabot and April (Russell) Burroughs of Vilonia; four grandchildren, Kelli (Scott) Williams and Kristi Smith both of Brighton, Colo., Faith Burroughs of Vilonia and Brent Burroughs of Conway; three great-grandchildren, Nickolas Williams, Spencer Williams; and a great-granddaughter to be born in August. He also had a special love for his grand-dog, Copper. Marshall also leaves behind a large host of cousins and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Vilonia First Baptist Church Music Fund. Funeral services will be on Monday, July 3 at 10 am at Vilonia First Baptist Church, 1206 Main Street in Vilonia. Visitation will be at the church on Sunday, July 2 from 2-4 p.m. Interment immediately following the service in Rest Hills Memorial Park.
