Dr. Angel Diaz of Atkins passed away Sunday, July 9, 2017. Born October 12, 1931 and veteran of the 67th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing, Fifth Air Force in Korea. Graduate of Holding Institute, Laredo, Texas, and earned a B.A. and M.A. in psychology from University of Texas, Austin, M.S. Ed. and Ed. D. in Special Education from University of Houston. Dr. Diaz also completed post-doctorial studies in Neurophysiology at Princeton University. Professor at ISU and NIU and Chairman of Special Education at Chicago State University until his retirement in 1997. Angel is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Mary Katherine Turner; two sons, Michael Wade Diaz of DeKalb, Ill., and Marc Richard Diaz of Bryant; four grandchildren, Alexandra and Connor of DeKalb, Ill., and Justin and Nicholas of Bryant. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, July 13, at Lemley Chapel with Sis. Roy Beth Kelley officiating. The family will receive friends at the close of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his honor may be made to Age to Age Wesley Foundation of Russellville, 1111 N. El Paso, Russellville, Ark., 72802 or to the Atkins Lions Club Scholarships.
