Carl Cone Heringer

Carl Cone Heringer, a long-time resident of Jonesboro, passed away on July 13, 2017. Born in Jonesboro, on May 30, 1930, Carl was the son of A.M. Heringer and Juanita Cone Heringer. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, A.M. Heringer, Jr., and John C. Heringer. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Brenda Stuck Heringer, his children, Maria Jones (Victor), Carl C. Heringer Jr. (Joyce), and Elmer Heringer (Carol), his grandchildren, Carl C. Heringer, III (Angelia), Tommy Heringer (Kelly), Sarah Heringer (Hunter), Alan Jones (Amanda), Elizabeth Jones, Nelson Heringer, Anna Heringer, Alex Heringer and four great-grandchildren. He was the picture of patience, understanding and service to his family, his customers and his church. Carl was a graduate of Jonesboro High School. He was a state debate team champion and was active in the band, theater and the student council. He received a BA in English from the University of Arkansas, where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. Following college, Carl planned to join the Heringer family business in Jonesboro, Lone Star, Inc. He became engaged to Brenda. Shortly after setting the wedding date, he received his orders to serve in the Air Force during the Korean conflict. He became an air traffic controller, stationed in Tacoma, Washington. During his six years of military service he achieved the rank of captain. Returning to Jonesboro in 1956, Carl became the board secretary of Lone Star Inc. and was the owner/operator of the appliance retail portion of the company for 25 years. In 1981, he retired from Lone Star and acquired a real estate license. From real estate, he moved into the mortgage lending industry where he worked for various companies assisting NE Arkansas families with home loans for 28 years. Carl was dedicated to his community, active in many civic projects and charities throughout his life. A longtime member of Jonesboro First United Methodist Church, he served on numerous governing boards for the church and taught the 6th grade Sunday school class for over 50 years. He was known for using games with prizes (usually candy) to teach Methodism to pre-teens. On holidays he brought treats. When asked about his hobbies, he would say "teaching Sunday school is my hobby." A hallway of the First United Methodist Church has been named in his honor. He was also an active supporter of the Jonesboro Lions Club, where he was a member for over 60 years and served as president multiple times. He received the Lions International Edward Dalstrom Distinguished Service Award. Carl's various other civic activities included serving as the Advisory Board Chairman for the Salvation Army, volunteering with SCAN (Stop Child Abuse and Neglect), and accepting an appointment by Governor Rockefeller as a Justice of the Peace for Craighead County. He received a Certificate of Principle from the Jonesboro Council on Human Relations for his work in advancing the cause of social justice in Northeastern Arkansas. The family wishes to thank all the caregivers that assisted Carl during his final years. A memorial service will be held at Jonesboro First United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 22 at 11 a.m. A family visitation will be held in the Atrium of First United Methodist Church at 10 a.m. on July 22, 2017.
