Marie "Freddie" Cox, 93, of Springdale, passed away peacefully at home Saturday, June 10, 2017. Marie Evelyn Friedrick was born July 5, 1923, in Oral, S.D., to Frank and Emma Friedrick. She graduated from Hot Springs High School in Hot Springs, S.D, and attended nurses training at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver, Colo., where she became a registered nurse.
She served as a nurse in the U.S. Army and Air Force. In 1953, she married Sidney D. Cox Jr., an Air Force officer and hospital administrator. The two lived all over the United States and Japan until he retired at the rank of lieutenant colonel. She, Sid and their three sons and daughter settled in Fayetteville in 1966, where she spent time raising her children and working part-time as a nurse with the University of Arkansas Health Center, while Sid taught at Fayetteville High School. She volunteered with the American Red Cross Bloodmobile, delivered food to the elderly through the Meals on Wheels program and was an active member at Sequoyah United Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing bridge, needlepoint, making latch-hooked rugs, flower gardening, restoring furniture and traveling the world with her husband and family, often in a camper.
Besides her husband of 64 years, she is survived by sons David and wife Kate of Centerton; Robert and wife Brenda of Goshen; Steven and wife Dianne of Pittsburg, Kan.; daughter Sandra Cox Birchfield and husband Jody of Fayetteville; granddaughter Jennifer Simmons and husband John of Tontitown; grandsons Daniel Cox of Minneapolis, Minn., and Jonathan Cox of Brooklyn, N.Y.; great-grandson Connor Simmons and great-granddaughter Vivienne Simmons; sister Elaine Naegle and husband Clare of Clearfield, Utah; brother Jim Friedrick and wife Joanne of Mitchell, S.D.; and several nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Walt Frederick of Seward, Neb., and sisters Mildred Judd of Hot Springs, S.D., and Louise Garrett of Ogden, Utah.
A visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, with a funeral service immediately following at 11 a.m. at Sequoyah United Methodist Church at 1910 N Old Wire Rd, Fayetteville, Ark. 72703. There will be a private family burial.
