Danny Lee Harris

Danny Lee Harris, age 71, of Rome, Ga., passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2017, at his home with the love of his life and his beloved dog. Danny was born on August 26, 1945, in Earle, Ark., son of the late Wilbur Harris and the late Mary Williams Harris. Danny was preceded in death by his brother James Harris, Jr and his sister Dorothy Robnolt. Danny is survived by his wife Jane H. Harris; his two sons, Michael Harris and Marc Harris, both of Hanover, Ind.; Jane's daughter Laura Lambert of Acworth, Ga.; four grandchildren; siblings including his brothers Charles Harris (Susan) of Jonesboro, Ark., Glenn Harris of Galveston, Texas, and his sister Deborah Gordon of Grove, Okla.; a nephew, nieces, cousins, and Jack, his dog. Danny served his country as a Forward Observer with the 1st Infantry Division in the Vietnam War, and was honorably discharged in 1971 as a 1st Lieutenant. While serving in Vietnam, Danny was awarded three Bronze Star medals. Danny graduated from Arkansas State University with a Bachelor of Science in biology, and a Master in rehabilitation counseling. He retired from Arkansas Rehabilitation Services in 2001 after a 30-year career as a vocational rehabilitation counselor and district manager serving eastern Arkansas. Although he was an Arkansas native, he lived in Indiana, Texas, and Georgia in retirement. He enjoyed woodworking, deer hunting, participating in running events, daily crossword puzzles, and cryptograms. He also tutored for the English as a Second Language program through Georgia Northwestern Technical College. A memorial service will be held at the Georgia National Cemetery, 2025 Mount Carmel Church Ln., Canton, Ga. 30114, Friday, March 31, 2:30 p.m., with Rev. Lee Smollar officiating. The American Legion Shanklin-Attaway Post 5 Honor Guard of Rome, Ga., will render military rites.
