Cleon Joseph "Joe" Shackelford Jr.

Cleon Joseph "Joe" Shackelford, Jr. 82 of DeWitt died May 2, 2017. He was born June 15, 1934 in Little Rock to C.J. "Shakey" and Mildred Shackelford. He was a graduate of the University of Arkansas and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He taught and drove a school bus in the DeWitt School District for many years. Joe was active in the Boy Scouts of America throughout his life. In his youth, he achieved the Order of the Arrow. As an adult, he volunteered for the Boy Scouts. Through his work for Boy Scouts, he received every award given to a volunteer at the state level, including the Silver Beaver. He had a great love of the outdoors, and loved to hunt and fish. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Sue Shackelford Crawford. Survivors include his wife, Linda; three children Cindy Morgan of DeWitt, Bert Waldron of Portsmouth, Va., and Mary Gordon and husband Rodney of Overland Park, Kan.; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Friday, May 5 from 5-7 p.m. at Essex Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 6 at Essex Funeral Home with burial in DeWitt Cemetery by Essex Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 608 S. Grandview Dr., DeWitt, Ark. 72042.
