Charles "Charlie" Lee Stewart

Charles "Charlie" Lee Stewart was born in Teoc, Mississippi on October 2, 1930, to the late Albert and Mary Edna (nee Williamson) Stewart. A son of the Blues, Charlie spent his adolescence in Memphis, Tennessee where he became one of the youngest barbers licensed in the state. Charlie went on to graduate from Booker T. Washington High School and Lemoyne Owen College. He later enlisted in the US Army where he worked as a medic, serving stateside during the Korean War. Charlie's Army surgical skills were utilized in the field of orthopedic research, a career he was devoted to for over 4 decades. His groundbreaking research in orthopedics and histotechnology is still in use today for hip replacement surgeries and the re-growth of bone. In 1967, Charlie married Eula Mae (Thomas) Williams. He adopted Eula's son from a previous marriage, Brien Keith. After the family's move to Little Rock, Arkansas in 1975 they later had a daughter, Taryn Lynn. Charlie died October 30, 2017 at his home in the company of his loving family. His parents, as well as his siblings, Elizabeth Hill, Lucinda Haskell, Albert Stewart Jr., and Molly Halliburton precede him in death. Charlie is survived by his wife, Eula Mae, son, Brien (Sharlene), daughter, Taryn, his older sister, Everlena Stewart, two grandchildren Bryce and Shayla, and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and cousins, colleagues and friends from Mississippi, Ohio, Louisiana and around the world. Services will be held at Mt Vernon Missionary Baptist Church, at 2 p.m. in Grenada, Mississippi. Interment will follow in the Haven Rest Cemetery.
