Grace Alexander

Mrs. Grace Alexander, 94, passed on Saturday, November 4, 2017. She was born in Sherrill, Ark. on October 3, 1923 to Will Alexander and Rosie Hicks Alexander. She spent her early years in Grady but later moved to Detroit, Michigan where she attended Cass Technical High School and continued her education at Lewis Business College. She had a successful career as an insurance underwriter with Great Lakes Life Insurance Company in Detroit and the Universal Life Branch Office in Little Rock, Arkansas. She had extensive biblical training and had served as Missionary of the Regular St. Marion Baptist District Association. For Many years, she served as an instructor for mission during the annual Congress of Christian Education. In 1991, with the encouragement of friends, she wrote a booklet "Biblical References to Understanding Home Missions" with the intent of giving others insight on the work and function of Home Missions. Early in her life, Grace accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and united with Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church. A devoted Christian and student of the word, she was a constant reader of the Bible. After returning to Arkansas, she settled in Pine Bluff and continued to be active in church work at Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church and New Direction Missionary Baptist Church until her health failed. In recent years, she reunited with Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Grace Alexander was predeceased by her parents and her older brothers, Sherman Daniel and Taft Daniel. She is survived by two sons, Leo C. McDonald and Dr. Joe L. Hargrove (Dr. Frances R. Harris), both of Little Rock, Ark.; six grandchildren, Deloris Nolen (Thomas) of Chicago, Ill., Phyllis Gillespie of Jensen Beach, Fla., Dwain Hargrove (Lynn) of Pine Bluff, Ark., Adrienne Thompson of Conway, Ark. and Joseph Hargrove of Little Rock, Ark. She is survived by twelve great grandchildren, Larnel Curry (Bobby Jean), Thomas Curry, Sr., Kimberly Lawson (Peree), Youlanda Douglas (Shaun), Steven Nolen, Joshua Hargrove, JoAnna Hargrove, Harry Gillespie Jr., Mallory Gillespie, Adrienne Thompson II, Rickey Thompson Jr., Alyndria Mooney (Willie) and 14 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by other loving family members including cousins, Ovella Bankston, Ronnie Bankston, Rhonda Bankston, James (JC) Carvan; nephews, David Evans (Linda), Loyal Daniel; nieces, Patricia Williams (Rev. Alonzo), JoAnn Owens, Linda Owens, Barbara Abraham and a number of other relatives and friends. Funeral Service will be Thursday, November 16, 2017 at 11 a.m., at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Grady, Arkansas. Rev. Marshawn Wilbourn, Sr. will be officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery by Brown Funeral Home of Pine Bluff, Ark. Visitation will be Wednesday, 5-7 p.m., at Brown Funeral Home in Pine Bluff. Her body will lie in-state Thursday, at 10:15 a.m., until services begin. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to The Lucy Johnson Scholarship Fund at the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
