Charles Louis Cabe Jr.

Charles Louis Cabe Jr., a timber businessman of southern Arkansas known for his active involvement in his community and philanthropic endeavors, died unexpectedly on Monday, October 16, 2017 at Baptist Health Medical Center in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. He will be remembered for his generosity, compassion, loyalty, and unfaltering love for his wife and family. Charles, a lifelong resident of Gurdon, was born on July 1, 1944, to Charles Louis and Mary Charlotte Cabe. After graduating from Gurdon Schools in 1963, he attended The University of Arkansas at Monticello and was an Alumni of Henderson State University. Charles married the love of his life, Anita Boyce Cabe, in 1967. He and Anita had one son, Clay Cabe, who they adored. Charles was as an active and dedicated member of the Gurdon First United Methodist Church. He was an avid vacationer who enjoyed reading, studying American history, and spending quality time with his family. He and Anita always loved their time together watching movies and playing board games, most every night, for 50 years. Charles and Anita are considered two of Gurdon's most loyal donors. Charles's lifelong commitment to Gurdon was evident by his charitable and voluntary contributions embracing a range of education, health, and social concerns. He was the president of Cabe Land and Timber in Gurdon, where he worked daily. In addition to serving as president of the C. Louis and Mary C. Cabe Foundation, he formerly sat on the Horace C Cabe Foundation Board. He served on many other boards, including the First State Bank of Gurdon, Bodcaw Bank of Stamps, Hot Springs Documentary Film Institute, and the Sheriffs' Youth Ranch. He was a past president and member of the Gurdon Chamber of Commerce, being named the Chamber Member of the Year in 2012. He was a president/member of the Gurdon Rotary Club and an honorary recipient of the Paul Harris Award. He was a past president and member of the Gurdon Hoo-Hoo, where he served as the Hoo-Hoo Deputy Supreme Nine in 1991. He attended two Republican National Conventions and had a memorable experience attending President Reagan's Inauguration in 1981. Charles was awarded the Red Tusk Award and the "I am Frank White" award for his lifetime of service in Arkansas for the Republican Party. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Louis and Mary Charlotte Cabe, and his sister, Marianne Cabe Long. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Anita; his son, Clay. Four nieces, Charlotte Barto and husband J.J.; Martha Klinefelter and husband Chris; Rebecca Gum and husband Russell; Carolyn Osteen and husband David; 13 great-nieces and nephews, Jack, Chase and Josh Barto; Georgia and Jonathan Klinefelter; Elic, Mary Charlotte, Cabe and Annie Gum; and Hutch, Sophie, Britt, and Bayless Osteen and cousins. Also survived by his sister-in-law, Annette D'Arcy and husband Jack; nephew, Craig D'Arcy and wife Sydney; great niece, Kate D'Arcy; great nephew, Christian D'Arcy. Visitation is planned for Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 10 a.m., with the service to follow at 11 a.m., at the Gurdon First United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Rose Hedge Cemetery at 1:30 p.m., under the direction of Pharr Funeral Home of Gurdon.
