Joseph "Joe" Dean Calhoun, 88, of White Hall, went to be with his Lord on Easter Sunday, April 1, 2018, at his home. He was born on August 29, 1929 in Fordyce, Ark., to Joseph Daniel Calhoun and Nina Hicks Calhoun. He graduated from Pine Bluff High School in 1947, and enlisted in the United States Navy the same year. He served our country in the Korean War on the USS Bausell for over three years in the South Pacific. After his discharge from the Navy, he began a career at the Pine Bluff Arsenal, and transferred to the Pine Bluff Arsenal Fire Department in 1970. He retired in 1993 after 23 years with the department, the last 13 serving as fire chief. Joe actively attended First Baptist Church of White Hall, and was a member of Jacob Brump Masonic Lodge #160. An active member of the White Hall community, he served as one of the first members of the White Hall Fire Department, as well as on several city committees. Joe married Juanita Harper Calhoun on October 7, 1967, and she predeceased him in June 2014 after 46 years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, David Hicks Calhoun. Survivors include one son, Joseph (Joe) Dean Calhoun, Jr (Paula) of Hot Springs; two daughters, Judy McConnell (Bruce) of White Hall, and Carolyn Rhoads, also of White Hall. He was also a wonderful and loving "Papaw" to eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 4, 2018, 1 p.m. at White Hall First Baptist Church, with Brother Paul Williams officiating. Mayor Noel Foster will give personal remarks. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery by Fuller Hale-South Funeral Services of Pine Bluff. Joe Calhoun leaves behind a wonderful legacy for his family and his community.
