Allan Arthur Gilbert, Jr.

Allan Arthur Gilbert Jr. of Fayetteville, died Saturday, June 9, 2018 in Fayetteville. He was born October 30, 1923 in Fayetteville, the son of Dr. Allan A. Gilbert and Lucille Fulbright Gilbert. Mr. Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 49 years, Phyllis Root Gilbert. A former editor of the Northwest Arkansas Times, he was also an officer of the Fulbright Investment Company and was active in community affairs. He attended Fayetteville public schools, the University of Arkansas Training School, Cranbrook Preparatory School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and the University of Arkansas. He was a member of Sigma Nu and Sigma Delta Chi. He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. His journalism career included editing military and college publications, the Northwest Arkansas Times and as Sunday and city editor of the Ft. Lauderdale News in Florida. He was past president of the state Associated Press Managing Editors Association and a past committee chairman for the Associated Press. He was a prize-winning columnist and editorial writer and the author of "A Fulbright Chronicle", a biography of the family of Sen. J. William Fulbright. A former vice chairman of the city planning commission, he also served on the city Beautification Committee, the city Arts Center Committee and the Greater Beaver Lake Association. He was a long-time justice of the peace and held posts with Regional Planning and the EOA. He was a former member of Rotary and an officer of the Fayetteville Country Club. He was a past president of the Fayetteville Boys Club and of the Ozark Mountain Pro-Am Golf Association. He was a lifetime member of the Gold Writers Association of America. Survivors include a son, Gary of Corpus Christi, Texas; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Cremation arrangements were by Moore's Chapel, no services will be held.
