Steve A. Nielsen

Steve A. Nielsen, 89, of Bella Vista, Arkansas, passed away March 20, 2018 at the Circle of Life Hospice at Bentonville, Arkansas after a brief illness. Steve was born in Winside, Nebraska, to Carl Jens and Anna Marie Miller Nielsen June 30th, 1928. He graduated from high school in Le Mars, Iowa and attended Westmar College also in Le Mars. After college he served in the U.S. Army for four years. For most of Steve's working career he served as a Foreign Service Reserve Officer for the U.S. Government. He served in Sudan, Honduras, Vietnam, Congo, Mexico, Afghanistan, Liberia and Washington D.C. While in Afghanistan he met another Foreign Service officer, Thelma Walters of Lamar, Missouri, and they were married on December 6, 1968, in Afghanistan. After Steve retired in 1978 they settled in Hinton, Iowa, and in 1984 moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas. Steve is survived by his wife of 49 years, Thelma, a brother, Ed Nielsen of Fargo, North Dakota, a sister, Lorraine Lake of Sebring, Florida, a sister-in-law, Edith Walters of Lamar, Missouri, and numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews. There was a Graveside Service 2 p.m. Thursday, March 22, 2018. Lake Cemetery in Lamar, Missouri. Arrangements are under the direction of the Konantz Warden Funeral Home.
