Mayneal M. Wayland, of the Residence at Otter Creek in Middlebury, Vt., passed away on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2018. She was 96. Mayneal was born in Little Rock, Ark., on Nov. 1, 1921 to Maurice Edwin McCoy and Vera Hoag McCoy. On May 30, 1943, she married Sloan R. Wayland in Washington, D.C. They moved to Rockland County, N.Y., in 1946. Mayneal moved to Middlebury in 2009, a year after her husband's death. They had three children. Mayneal earned her B.A. at Hendrix College in Arkansas and her M.S.W. from Columbia University in New York City. Mayneal and her husband Sloan lived together for over 65 years. They met at Hendrix College and got married during World War II. In 1946 they moved to Shanks Village in Orangeburg, N.Y., a converted WWII army barracks where veterans and their families lived while completing their degrees under the GI Bill. Friends there became friends for life and the core of the Waylands' social lives for all of their years. The Waylands moved to Blauvelt, N.Y., in 1952 and lived there continuously except for the late 1950's when she and her family lived in Beirut, Lebanon for two years. She also travelled with her husband extensively as his work took him overseas. Mayneal was employed primarily as a social worker. At all times, she was a mother, homemaker, gardener, and potter. She explored all things with an incredible thirst for knowledge and experience. Over time, she played recorders in various early music ensembles, went to concerts, supported and encouraged young musicians, and instilled a love of music in her children and grandchildren that deeply impacted their lives. She also became a master gardener and expert on ferns. In general she shared her enthusiasm and joy for life with her family and friends. Mayneal is survived by her brother Richard McCoy of Naples, Fla.; her son, Edward M. Wayland and his wife, Mary Bauer, of Charlottesville, Va.; by her son, Kenneth R. Wayland and his wife, Iris Weisman, of Dayton, Ohio; by her daughter, Jody Woos and her husband, Dennis Woos, of New Haven, Vt.; by her grandchildren, Douglas Woos, Timothy Woos, Ella Bauer Wayland, and Corey Bauer Wayland; and by many nieces and nephews and their spouses and children and grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Sloan Wayland; and her brother M.E. McCoy Jr. of Bokeelia, Fla. The family invites friends to gather for a memorial and a celebration of the life of Mayneal Wayland at the Rockland Friends Meeting, 60 Leber Road, Blauvelt, N.Y., on Saturday, June 16, at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Addison County Home Health & Hospice, P.O. Box 754, Middlebury, Vt. 05753.
