John Darrell (Jack) Jones passed away peacefully in his home on May 12, 2018. Jack was born in Mingo Junction, Ohio, son of the late John and Viola Jones. In his youth, Jack enjoyed tap dancing, performing in the drum corps, serving as a volunteer firefighter, and drag racing, which began his well-known love of automobiles. Along with a successful career in retail management, Jack spent countless hours volunteering for many different charitable and civic organizations. Most recently, Jack was a Freemason and volunteer for Safeplace in Spruce Pine, N.C. He was an active member and held numerous leadership positions during his 55-year service to the Kiwanis Club, throughout the US. Jack was a member of Warwick Memorial United Methodist Church in Newport News, Va. Jack is survived by his children, Lisa (Mike) Jones Carpenter of Newport News, Va., Chad (Emily) Jones of Nashville, N.C., James (Su) Jones of Centerton, Ark., John Jones of Hiddenite, N.C., Patricia Ann Jones Newsome of McLeansville, N.C., Terrence Jones of Greensboro, N.C., William "Bill" (Martha) Hanley of Ontario, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; his sister and brother-in-law, William "Bill" and Darla Wyckoff of Garland, Texas; and his niece, Patricia Carol Wyckoff of Coppell, Texas. Along with his life-long love of cars, Jack also enjoyed history, traveling in his RVs, working outside with his hands, reality TV, and playing cards. While he despised all vegetables, he was famous for his love of ice cream and bacon. His children will always remember his Sunday morning pancake breakfasts, his yearly Christmas light displays, and his many phrases, such as "I am glad you got to see me" and "You can have anything you can afford". Jack's children would like to extend special gratitude to Gail for her selflessness and dedication over the last years and final days of his life. Her care not only comforted him but also gave the family peace and comfort knowing he was in such capable hands as he neared the end of his long journey. We cannot thank you enough for everything you have done for him and us. The family will hold a private service and asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to theAmerican Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Ct., Glen Allen, VA 23060-9979, or by visiting https://www.heart.org.
