CMSgt John Bernard Carpenter (United States Air Force Retired), 74, of Austin, passed away Monday, May 21, 2018 in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was born November 27, 1943 in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania to the late John Thomas and Mary Gump Carpenter. John enlisted in the United States Air Force at the age of eighteen. He was a Vietnam Veteran who served his country proudly and with honor for twenty-nine and a half years. John was a man of strong character. He was humble, honest, responsible, thoughtful, and strong. He was quite the man. He handled his illness like he was Superman, never complaining. John was preceded in death by his sister, Peggy Vitarelli and his step-son, Brandon Conner. Survivors include his wife of twenty-nine years, Michele, their love was magical and like few have ever seen; daughter, whom he adored, Nancy (Britt) Cobble of Wilmington, North Carolina; step-daughter, Amy Conner of Conway, Arkansas; step-son, Bill (Jessica) Conner of Atlanta, Georgia; daughters, Michele Lopez and Cynthia Harris; grandchildren, Andrew Athanas of Wilmington, North Carolina, Lexie Athanas of Dubai, Stephanie Athanas of the United States Air Force Academy (of whom he was extra proud because of her future Air Force career), Linnea (Rawn) Gabbard of Conway, Arkansas, Hunter and Mickey Munch of Little Rock, Thomas and Pepper Conner of Atlanta, Georgia; sisters, Linda Baer of Morgantown, West Virginia and Debbie Bissett of Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. Memorial services will be scheduled for a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
