Our wonderful father, Jerol Herreid Garrison, 86, of Fayetteville, Arkansas passed peacefully from this life on Thursday, September 6, 2018 after a brief illness. He was the oldest child of Norma and Earl Garrison born on October 4, 1931 in Columbia, Missouri. His family moved to Fayetteville in 1949 where Jerol began studies at the University of Arkansas. Jerol met the love of his life, Sally Ingels, at the Wesley Foundation on campus. During these years Jerol served as editor of the Arkansas Traveler and played clarinet in the Marching Razorback band. He and Sally were engaged after graduating with degrees in Journalism and Social Work, respectfully. Jerol was in active military service for two years stationed at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. After his service he and Sally were married at Central United Methodist Church in Fayetteville on June 5, 1954. They moved to Evanston, Illinois where Jerol received his Master's degree in Journalism from Northwestern University. After two years as a reporter for the Neosho Daily News, the Garrisons moved to North Little Rock and began what Sally referred to as "The Great Adventure" - 64 years of remarkable memories as a family with three daughters, Linda, Margaret, and Cathy. Both Jerol and Sally were very devoted and made life joyous and secure. Over the years, the Garrison family traveled and camped in most all of the National Parks. Girl Scouting was a large part of our lives with Sally as the leader and Jerol referred to as "Daddy Scout". Together they led the troop on many adventures including two trips to the Appalachian Mountains for several days of overnight backpacking and many canoe trips, including a three-day Buffalo River float trip into the White River. Their love and generosity extended to their daughter's families, leaving them with a rich legacy of unconditional love and support. Jerol's career in Journalism included many years as a reporter for the Arkansas Gazette including the period during the segregation crisis, in the Communication Department at UALR, and as Director of Communication at AP&L. He was well-respected in all his work and had the uncanny ability to stay true to his journalistic nature to ‘get the word out' as well as support the company where he worked. Honesty and respect for others were guideposts for all he did in life. You could "go to the bank" on the word of Jerol Garrison and everyone knew it. Jerol and Sally lived happily the past seven years at a beautiful home in a wooded setting at Butterfield Trail Village in Fayetteville. They were members of Central Methodist and previously of Sylvan Hills Methodist in NLR. They attended performances of the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas along with plays and other arts in the community, enjoyed their Winers and Diners group, Great Decisions discussions, birdwatching, and volunteering with Butterfield recycling program and community meals at church. Jerol loved tending his garden plot, enjoyed hikes, and participated regularly in exercise. Jerol is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Sally Garrison; two daughters, Margaret Holaway and Catherine Stark (Michael); six grandchildren, Emily Richmond, Sally Chew (Chris), Sarah Luz (Caio), Neil Holaway, Bryon Stark (Jordan), and Matthew Stark (Peyton); two great-grandchildren; sister, Nancy Larner; and brother-in-law, Neil Ingels (Judy). He is preceded in death by his parents and his beloved daughter, Linda Richmond. A visitation will take place at Moore's Funeral Chapel on Thursday, September 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. Service will be at Central United Methodist Church on Friday, September 14, at 2 p.m., with interment to follow at Fairview Memorial Gardens in Fayetteville. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Jerol Garrison Journalism Scholarship at UALR or Heifer International. Condolences may be given online at www.mooresfuneralchapel.com.
