Description

The Butcher Shop's beef is prime or choice, depending on the cut, in sizes ranging from the 8-ounce Filet Mignon to the 25-ounce Porterhouse. The filet and the Kansas City Strip were both close to forktender at recent dinners, as was the Prime Rib. The house salad is decently endowed with more than just iceberg lettuce. If you order the baked potato loaded, it will be buried under an avalanche of butter, sour cream, chopped scallions, bacon and grated cheese. Among the appetizers, the Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail is a retro presentation in a fluted ice-cream sundae glass filled with enough cocktail sauce to service a battalion of shrimp. Monarch of the restaurant's desserts is the Sizzling Apple Pie, served bubbling hot in a black miniskillet with a drizzling of cinnamon caramel sauce and a baseball-size scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Mood: At its previous location, The Butcher Shop attracted lots of diners who enjoyed the option of cooking their own steak. That choice is still available, but few people do it anymore given the somewhat outof-the-way location of the flaming grill. Service is generally cheerful, while the pacing of courses tends to be rapid. The staff's attire of black T-shirts and khakis denotes the restaurant's informal tone, as do the green plastic tablecloths. Decor is unobtrusive, with booths and tables comfortably spaced.
