Semi causes gas pump fire, power outage at Springdale station

SPRINGDALE — A semitruck caused a fire at a gas station and a power outage in the surrounding area Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters got the 911 call at 1:11 p.m., said Kevin McDonald, assistant chief with the Springdale Fire Department. No one was injured.

The truck was traveling south on Thompson Street and missed a left turn, McDonald said. The driver then turned left into the Shell gas station at 1501 S. Thompson St. to cut through the pump area.

The truck hit a gas pump and broke it off, McDonald said. The pump then caught fire. Staff at the location hit the emergency shutoff valve for the system. The fire was under control within five minutes of the firefighters' arrival, but the pump was destroyed.

The truck proceeded to hit a power pole and the tension on the lines broke some power cables, McDonald said. The stress on the system caused a fuse to blow, which caused a power outage in the immediate area.
