Benton man dies in explosive blaze

BENTON - A 61-year-old man died Sunday night when fire engulfed his home and oxygen tanks exploded, preventing rescue personnel from getting close, authorities said Monday.

A Benton police officer saw smoke coming from the home at 416 S. First St. at about 9:30 p.m. and tried to see if anyone was inside. Three loud explosions that sent a large oxygen cylinder flying from the home forced the officer and firefighters to retreat and nearby residents to evacuate until the threat subsided, authorities said.

Inside the home, firefighters found the body of Jimmy Lewis Glenn. Glenn's body was sent to Little Rock for an autopsy.

Investigators Monday were still unsure what caused the blaze.
