1 hospitalized in truck-stop gunfire

An argument between three people pumping gas at a Little Rock truck stop led to gunfire Wednesday, police reported.

Officers responded shortly after 5 p.m. to Love’s Travel Stop at 11700 Interstate 30, where the occupants of two vehicles at adjacent gas pumps had been in a verbal altercation. The driver of a gold-colored Pontiac Grand Prix pulled a gun and began shooting, striking 22-year-old Chance Kumpe in the back as he ran away.

Kumpe was taken to Baptist Health Medical Center for treatment. His condition was unknown late Thursday. A passenger in Kumpe’s car who was involved in the argument, 19-year-old Dalton Reynolds, was not injured.

Witnesses told investigators that the shooter fled in an unknown direction on Otter Creek Parkway, according to a police incident report. The suspect is described as black, male and between the ages of 16 and 19. The suspect was described as standing 5-foot-7 and weighing 140 pounds.

Police recovered a semi-automatic handgun and several bullet casings from the scene. They requested surveillance footage from the truck stop, but were told there were no security cameras in the area of the gas pumps.

An investigation is ongoing.
