Entrepreneur-class deadline draws near

The deadline to register for the city's Entrepreneurial Training Course is Thursday.

The 10-week course, which begins Aug. 29, is meant for anyone who has thought about starting a business or turning a hobby or skill into a profession.

"Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, which is why the city of Little Rock is committed to helping entrepreneurs thrive," said Chauncey Holloman, the city's small-business development coordinator.

The class is a partnership between the city and the Small Business and Technology Development Center at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Topics include business concepts, feasibility, market analysis, pricing and cash flow.

"Each participant receives assistance with creating a realistic business plan and will graduate with a completed plan to implement a business idea," according to a news release.

Little Rock Climbing Center, Artistic Edge Custom Framing and Imprentta Printing are all examples of successful graduates of the course, it said.

Classes will take place Mondays from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Willie Hinton Neighborhood Resource Center. Tuition is $100, which includes the classes, textbook and plan assistance.

Those interested can enroll online at somayfield.wixsite.com/lrsbdo/enroll.

More information is available by calling Holloman at (501) 379-1505 or emailing her at cholloman@littlerock.org.

On special day, zoo members get in free

Little Rock Zoo members will gain free admission Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. as part of the zoo's "Member Appreciation Day."

Anyone with a "plus" membership can take one additional guest for free.

The day will have an African theme, with a safari through the African-animal section of the zoo. There will be a scavenger hunt, crafts, animal keeper chats and enrichment activities, and dance and drumming demonstrations in the plaza and amphitheater.

A reading of My Painted House, My Friendly Chicken, and Me by Maya Angelou will be presented by the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center.

For an additional $5 at the entrance gate per person, zoo members will have access to a buffet meal from Cafe Africa on the Bear Lawn, served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The zoo is encouraging members to dress up in an African theme for the day.

"Be traditional or bring out your wild side. We love to see our members participate wholeheartedly," a news release said.

The zoo also is encouraging members to share their best family photo from the day on the zoo's Facebook page for a chance to win a free one-year membership renewal. Entries must include the membership number with the photo, and all photos must be posted before 11:59 p.m. Saturday.

Bulb-planting next in cemetery's series

A lesson on planting spring bulbs will take place Saturday at Mount Holly Cemetery.

The event is part of the cemetery's regular Garden Series. It will be at 9 a.m. at the Bell House in the center of the cemetery at 1200 S. Broadway.

Susan Rose will present the class. A suggested donation of $5 would benefit the Downtown Dames' projects at the cemetery. The Dames present classes on the third Saturday each month April through October.

"At present, they are raising funds for the restoration of the Bell House, to its turn of the century appearance," according to a news release.

Attendees are encouraged to take a lawn chair. Refreshments and door prizes will be provided.

September's Garden Series will be on hummingbirds, and the final class of 2016 in October will be led by a University of Arkansas horticulture specialist.
