Colleges and universities across the state are creating food pantries to help students and faculty and staff members.

Unlike local or regional food pantries, the ones on higher-education campuses typically require users to provide a student or work identification card. Some, such as the one at Pulaski Technical College and at Northwest Arkansas Community College, ask that users fill out an application.
The application helps determine such information as household size and kitchen equipment users can access. The information allows for each user to get food tailored to the household.
Most campus pantries have teamed up with area food banks to fill their shelves. Food drives on campus and grocery-store sales also help.
The exception to the partnerships is the University of Central Arkansas, which receives monetary and food donations on its Conway campus.
"We are probably going to start working with them," said Brian James, a UCA English instructor and resident master of Edge Residential College at Hughes Hall, referring to the Arkansas FoodBank. "We kind of wanted to get our legs under us and get the hang of running the pantry."
Student volunteers usually man the pantries, where the shelves are stocked in the manner of a grocery store, or food can be prepackaged for users. If clients can't pick up food during pantry hours, the campus pantries will schedule a pickup.
The Arkansas colleges and universities that have food pantries -- and their hours and locations -- are:
• Arkansas State University at Jonesboro, Volunteer A-State Center at 2907 E. Johnson Ave., Mondays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Beebe, Marked Tree and Newport campuses have a mobile food pantry -- sponsored by the United Methodist Foundation of Arkansas and the Northeast District of the United Methodist Church -- visiting each of the campuses on the first, second and third Tuesdays of the month from 1 to 3 p.m.
• North Arkansas College, South Campus, Room M171, in Harrison, Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to noon and Thursdays from 1 to 5 p.m.
• Northwest Arkansas Community College, Becky Paneitz Student Center Room 115, Bentonville, first and third Fridays of the month from 1 to 3 p.m.
• Pulaski Technical College, R.J. Willis Lecture Hall in the Campus Center, North Little Rock, second and last Fridays of the month from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The college also takes prepackaged bags to its south campus on the same days.
• University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, Bud Walton Hall at 324 Stadium Drive, Mondays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesdays from 3 to 5 p.m. and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• University of Arkansas at Little Rock, opening Feb. 4 in the Donaghey Student Center, Room 110B, Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Adair-Greenhouse Human Sciences Hall, Room 233, second and fourth Thursdays of the month from 2 to 4 p.m.
• University of Central Arkansas, Conway, Old Main 108, Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
